D.J. Williams… Where does a blogger begin?
Researching the Chicago Bears newest middle linebacker the last few days started out quite promising. A quick search on NFL.com shows us D.J. Williams has 90+ tackles six times since 2004 (Williams spent 2012 playing back up duties for seven games). So, with every big time free agency signing I like to find out the contract terms. A quick search on NBC’s rotoworld (thanks for the tip BearsFam) tells us … get this… $900k base salary. I was hoping for a good deal because I knew Williams had previous issues with the NFL and law enforcement. As we dig a little deeper and try to find more about the new replacement for Brian Urlacher – $900k (possible $1.75million) seems generous. There is a common theme surrounding D.J. Williams. The theme is not based on massive amounts of charity work, not about a leader on and off the field, and not even a Brandon Marshal-like world wide apologizing: admitting to the fans that you have a problem. I’m not even sure how to describe the common theme the comes up over and over. So I won’t describe it. I will show you. The Following three quotes, from three random sources, are the first few lines of stories based on D.J. Williams. The Denver Post, Mile High Sports, and Daily Harald.
Broncos linebacker ..Williams is a rebel without a clue. He hates on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, shows disdain for the Denver fans that pay his salary and picks fights with the media over ugly headlines written by his own hand. ~ Mark Kiszla The Denver Post article
Criminal. Thug. Cheater. Liar. Overall bad guy. Those are just some of the less-than-flattering words used to describe Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams in recent months. ~ Chris Bianchi Mile High Sports
The Bears are gambling that troubled D.J. Williams, a first-round pick in 2004, can replace Brian Urlacher — at least for this year. ~ Bob LeGere Daily Herald
